1.6 Standard Palette of Materials

KCC approved materials for highway construction, surface treatments and boundary finishes

The Standard Palette of Materials list relates to Roads and Pavements Specification, and is split into two sections:

  • The first section consists of a list indicating standard materials that may be considered as acceptable for use within the intended public highway and which do not attract a commuted sum* for their use in the highway construction.
  • The second section consists of a list indicating standard materials that may be considered as acceptable for use within the intended public highway and which attract a commuted sum* for their use in the highway construction.

* A Commuted Sum is a charge levied by the Highway Authority to cover future forecast maintenance expenses for construction materials within adoption areas which have a higher maintenance cost for the Highway Authority.

In both instances, all items should be easily obtainable and ‘off-the-shelf’ products – these should be locally sourced where possible. The use of all proposed materials will be subject to the Highways Asset Manager’s Technical Approval Process. An Outline Technical Review is recommended prior to this – additional information can be found here.
