Who is the Kent Design Guide for and why does it exist?

Who is the Kent Design Guide for?

The Kent Design Guide is a shared resource for everyone involved in the planning, design and development process in Kent and Medway. This includes Local Planning Authority and Kent County Council officers, landowners, developers and house builders, design professionals and the local community.

Why does the Kent Design Guide exist?

The Kent Design Guide is a tool to align priorities, enable collaboration, clarify technical standards and promote best practice in the planning, design and delivery of sustainable places across Kent. It presents what good looks like in Kent, setting clear expectations and quality standards for future development proposals.

How was this guide developed?

Originally published in 2005, this web-based edition of the Kent Design Guide has been shaped by extensive engagement with Kent’s county and local authorities, developers, house builders and partnership organisations through a series of workshops and feedback sessions between 2021 and 2025. Their reflections, expertise and commitment to design quality are reflected throughout the website structure and content.

Now that you understand what the Kent Design Guide is for, the next page explains how to navigate and use the different sections of this website.
