1.8 Drainage

Highway drainage requirements and their relationship with wider SuDS guidance.

As Highway Authority, KCC may adopt drainage systems associated with highway drainage whilst as Lead Local Flood Authority, KCC will be consulted on major development proposals in relation to local flood risk. Additional information about what is required when designing SuDS in relation to local flood risk is provided here.

Making it happen – Drainage systems SuDS and Highways is the Kent County Council document which gives advice and guidance on the design and implementation of surface water drainage systems, including Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). It summarises:

  • KCC’s requirements in how to approach drainage provision within new development
  • KCC’s approach to drainage approval and adoption of drainage systems, specifically those associated with highways

The document was previously published in 2020. Since then, there have been significant updates to national policy, legislation and guidance relating to SuDS, most notably the introduction of mandatory SuDS approval under Schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act in England from 2025. This updated guidance reflects these changes.
