3.5 SuDS design workflow

A step by step guide to designing a SuDS scheme in Kent, from baseline assessment to maintenance & adoption strategy.

Please use the following SuDS design flow, with associated bullet points, as checklist when designing a SuDS scheme in Kent.

Step 1 – Baseline Assessment

  • Detailed site survey
  • Ground investigations (BRE 365 tests, groundwater mapping)
  • Flood risk and overland flow assessment

Step 2 – Concept Design

  • Apply runoff hierarchy
  • Map opportunities for infiltration
  • Identify locations for blue–green infrastructure

Step 3 – Detailed Hydraulic Design

  • Use the upper-end EA climate allowances
  • Design attenuation and conveyance for extreme events
  • Ensure exceedance routes avoid buildings and critical infrastructure

Step 4 – Water Quality Treatment

  • Apply SuDS treatment stages appropriate to risk
  • Provide evidence through CIRIA SuDS Manual methodologies

Step 5 – Landscape & Biodiversity Integration

  • Incorporate natural habitats, wetland shelves, biodiverse grassland
  • Ensure public amenity value

Step 6 – Maintenance & Adoption Strategy

  • Provide lifetime maintenance plan
  • Identify management body and funding mechanism
  • Demonstrate safe access for maintenance
