6.1 Playing Pitch Strategies

A Playing Pitch Strategy assesses the quantity, quality, accessibility, and future demand for outdoor sports pitches (e.g., football, rugby, cricket). These documents are held by local authorities.
Typically, they include:

  • Full pitch audits
  • Demand forecasting
  • Community consultation
  • Modelling future needs based on population growth
  • Identification of deficiencies and investment priorities

Playing Pitch Strategy evidence could be used to identify:

  • where new pitches are required
  • where enhancements are necessary
  • where community access agreements can strengthen local provision
  • which facilities are at capacity and require investment
  • risk of oversupply or duplication.
