Local Transport Plan

Delivering Growth Without Gridlock

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Close to London, home to nationally important ports and with excellent road and rail connections to the rest of the UK and Europe, Kent has real opportunities for continued growth. By 2031, the county’s population is predicted to grow by around 380,000, which means building almost 180,000 new homes in the same period.

To achieve this growth, we’ll have to make substantial improvements to Kent’s transport infrastructure. Public transport provision, particularly buses, must be a major part of this to meet the needs of our growing population.

To enable all Kent residents to travel easily, safely and quickly, we need a transport network that meets current demand and future needs driven by climate change, new technologies and evolving work patterns and lifestyles.

OUR ROLE IN TRANSPORT

As the Local Transport and Highway Authority, were responsible for managing and maintaining all Kent’s local roads and Public Rights of Way. We also work closely with national organisations and agencies including National Highways (formerly Highways England) and Network Rail.

We have a statutory duty to produce a Local Transport Plan (LTP) explaining how well work towards realising our transport vision for Kent over the coming years. In Local Transport Plan 4: Delivering Growth without Gridlock (2016-2031) we set out how transport can contribute to making Kent a great place to live, work and do business.

PLAYING YOUR PART

Our ambition is to deliver safe and effective transport that supports and benefits Kent’s communitiesbusinesses, economy and environment. As a developer, designer or architect, you have a key role in helping us deliver our five specific outcomes, set out below. These will be important criteria in our decision-making when we assess your designs and planning submissions for new development in Kent.
