Thanet

Thanet is located at the most easterly point of Kent and is surrounded by the sea on three sides. Thanet boasts 20 miles of coastline with attractive chalk cliffs and beautiful sandy beaches and bays.  This is reflected in the coast’s designation under international and national legislation, including Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Special Protection Areas, Special Areas of Conservation, a Marine Conservation Zone and a Ramsar site.

The district consists of the three main coastal towns of Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs and attractive coastal and rural villages.  The built up area is densely populated and forms an almost continuous urban belt around the north east coast. This is punctuated by areas of countryside between the towns, providing relief in the built-up area.

The district has a rich heritage with around 2,000 listed buildings and 27 Conservation Areas which include attractive Victorian terraces, Regency squares and historic parks and gardens, together with large and attractive art deco properties along the coast. This rich heritage and the close proximity to the sea gives the district its distinctive character. Thanet also has a rich archaeological landscape largely due to its origins as an island and its close proximity to Europe which led to the area becoming a gateway to England. Its historic landscape contains many archaeological sites ranging from prehistoric times to WW1 and WW2 anti invasion defences.

The recently adopted Local Plan 2020 identifies a significant level of new housing to be provided, and also aims to encourage the growth of existing and new businesses.  At the same time, the Plan seeks to ensure that new development is sustainable and built to the highest quality whilst respecting its historic environment.
